Cyclists are well served: the Cooks River shared path runs along the suburb's southern boundary and offers a flat, largely traffic-free ride towards the bay and beyond. The trip to the CBD by train is short, and Sydney Airport is only a few kilometres away — handy for travel, though worth keeping in mind for flight-path noise in some pockets.

Marrickville is generally regarded as a safe, well-established inner-city suburb where plenty of people are out and about day and night. Like anywhere close to a major city, the busier strips can get boisterous on weekend evenings, particularly near the pubs, live-music venues and the border with Newtown, so the usual city street-sense applies late at night.
